时尚门户 - Job Resolutions for 2005 |
Four, three, two, one...Happy Career New Year! Just as you make resolutions to improve your life at the start of each year, so too must you resolve to improve your career. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
"I promise I will..."
Make a list of long-term goals I want to achieve in my career.
This is essential in planning your career path and professional growth. If you dont know where youre headed, you wont know how to get there.
Be ready to adapt my plan.
Things change and your career plan needs to change accordingly. You may have intended to take one, straight route directly to the top. However, you cant go through your career with blinders on. Sometimes veering off the course can lead to some great opportunities.
Brush up on my skills and/or acquire new ones.
Community colleges and professional associates offer an array of continuing education classes to help you further develop your professional skills. However, no knowledge is ever wasted. If youve always been interested in sewing, take a sewing class. It may not help you in your immediate position, but it may expand your creativity or come in handy for future jobs. For instance, if your background is finance, your newly acquired sewing ability could land you a job in the finance department of a textile company or apparel firm.
Evaluate my current position.
Is it time for a job change? Now is the time to take a good, hard look at your current position and ask yourself:
Am I still growing as an employee?
Am I challenged enough to stay fresh and focused, or have I become bored and complacent?
Do I have room to advance, or have I come as far as Im going to go?
Are there any educational opportunities available to me through my current employer that I have not taken advantage of?
If youve answered "no" to any of these questions, it may be time to examine what you are doing and explore what you would like to do.
Update my résumé.
The new year is the logical time to review all your accomplishments from the previous year and add them to your résumé. That way, youll be ready if a new opportunity should arise. If you follow this rule each year, updating your résumé wont be such a daunting task when youre ready to launch a job search.
Plan a vacation.
Too often we plow through the entire year, devoting endless hours to overtime or traveling, without scheduling some time for ourselves. Time off is vital. It helps to increase productivity and reduce burnout. A vacation can re-energize you so you are ready to more effectively meet the challenges of work. Promise this year you wont let your vacation time stack up and be rolled over to next year. Plan your vacation now, even if its months away. Youre more likely to use your vacation time if its already planned and youll also have something pleasant to look forward to.
Vow to de-stress.
When it gets a little hectic trying to balance work and home responsibilities, engage in stress management techniques. Ridding your body of the stressful chemicals is not only healthy, but it keeps you focused and energized. This could mean taking regular walks around your office or home neighborhoods, attending a yoga class or meditating regularly. Many stress-reducing activities can be performed right at work for immediate relief.
This New Years Eve, strap on those party hats and celebrate, because January 1 marks the beginning of what could be a revitalized, invigorated career.
